Magnetic tape deteriorates over time and two tapes of Qodesh recordings from the early 90’s had been sitting in my basement. I’d become concerned that they would eventually lose the raw tracks/recordings on them.

So I digitized them and my son-in-law Nate started remixing them. Nate currently does music lessons in his private studio. You can book him through his website.

WHY NOW?
WHY NOW?
WHY NOW?
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that we had both recordings from the (very different) 1991 and 1992 versions of Qodesh (I had mistakenly believed for all these years that I only had the analog tapes from the 1991 recordings. Surprise!).

By June 2019, with help from John Nicholson and Hilltop Recording Studio in Nashville, TN, I had the digitized song files returned to me. Then my son in law, Nate Lee Hicks with Echo Hill Studio started remixing them.

In 1988 or 1989, Joe Feldpausch and I (Gerard) started jamming some song ideas I had. Those ideas were usually recorded on cassette and at times, 4-track cassette.
I remember him living in a house on First Avenue in Evansville, us putting together his brand new, fire engine red, Pearl Export drums, and me playing them while he had to get ready for work. But that is a different story for another time. Joe? 🙂 Tim Tooke soon joined us on bass guitar and we set out looking for a singer (auditions are another long and often funny story).

After several auditions, we settled on Todd Scott from Ellettsville (Bloomington), IN. Actually, prior to Todd joining, we recorded a 3-song demo with two instrumentals and “Day of Atonement”, with Barry Nicholson (from the band, After The Fall) singing. before
A highlight from that demo was John Elefante of Pakaderm Records calling to encourage us, telling me he liked the songs, though we didn’t have a singer yet. I don’t remember a lot of detail from that conversation. And I think we must have mailed that demo to several labels at the time.

After recording and gigging with the original lineup, Todd Scott and then Tim Tooke left the band. I don’t remember the exact details, and they are really not important all these years later. We added Kevin Thornton to cover both lead vocals and bass guitar.
Becoming a 3-piece and adding Kevin’s songwriting abilities, our sound changed considerably (as evidenced by the 1992 EP). Both the 1991 and 1992 studio EP’s were recorded at DBH Audio in Evansville IN, with B. Todd Adkins doing the tracking and mixing. Todd also produced the 1991 EP.

I think we spent 60 hours total on that for tracking, mixing and production. According to Joe’s memory, for the 1992 EP, we had been given some recording time at DBH, but we didn’t have or spend the money to really produce those 5 songs. So the “finished product” on that 92′ EP was basically just getting levels on everything and going to master for the cassette.
This was something I’d regretted all these years. I thought we had some really interesting songs on that EP, but they were never given the attention and production that they deserved… Until now.
